Formula for Calculating Image Size

by | Sep 10, 2025 | Paradigm

According to a document at the Washington Research Library Consortium, digital file size is calculated by multiplying the dimensions in inches by the dots printed per inch (dpi) by the bits per pixel (24 bit depth) divided by 8 bits per byte to get the number of bytes divided by 1,048,576 to end in megabytes.

Here is a calculator to do the math for you.

Assumptions: 300 dpi, 24-bit color (8 bits × 3 channels).
