Dates
- 4000 BC Oldest human remains. Inhabitants hunted and fished. Shell middens contain oysters, clams, conch, and coquina.
- 1500s Timucuans farmed corn, beans, peas, squash, and pumpkins.
- 1513 Juan Ponce de Leon claimed and named Florida for Spain.
- 1565 Pedro Menendez established St. Augustine.
- 1763 Treaty of Paris gave Florida to England.
- 1768 Governor Grant built indigo plantation.
- 1783 Treaty of Paris gave Florida back to Spain.
- 1784 Spaniards farmed rice, sugarcane, hogs, and cattle.
- 1821 Florida became a US territory.
- 1845 Florida became the 27th US state.
- 1920s Investors planned residential community; killed by the Great Depression.
- 1930s Investors harvested pine and leased land to Florida DNR as a Wildlife Management Area).
- 1957 Florida WMA built Guana Dam for waterfowl hunting.
- 1984 Florida DNR bought Guana from developers.
- 1999 Florida DEP (DNR) and NOAA established the GTM Research Reserve.
- 2001 Florida Senate removed public access to archaeological location data.
- 2025 Florida DEP almost gave 600 acres to developers.
